Periodontal Care Frederick MD

The team at Dr. Politmi Mantzouranis, DDS’ office is very serious about your overall health, not just the health of your teeth.  This includes making sure that your gums and the bones surrounding your teeth are in good health and free from periodontal (gum) disease. Any bleeding in your mouth is a sign of disease. The bacteria which live in your mouth can travel through your circulatory system. Studies have shown a link between periodontal disease and heart, kidney, liver, and lung problems, as well as miscarriages. Some of the signs and symptoms of developing periodontal disease include:

  • Bleeding, inflamed, and/or red gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Increased spaces between teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Discomfort or tenderness
  • Pus around the gums and teeth
  • Receding gums around a tooth
  • Sensitivity

Aside from possibly losing your permanent teeth, there are many serious health risks associated with periodontal disease. Untreated periodontal disease has been linked to heart disease and infective endocarditis. In fact, patients with gum disease are four times more likely to suffer from heart disease!

To avoid advancement in periodontal disease, patients should eat a balanced diet, practice good oral hygiene, and attend regularly scheduled dental appointments with Dr. Politmi Mantzouranis, DDS. At our dental practice, we will do our best to educate our patients about the importance of their overall health. We also recommend that all our patients use hydrofloss and a Sonicare toothbrush.  If you are experiencing any discomfort or pain in your teeth or gums, we strongly recommend that you visit our office immediately.
